DISTRICT HEALTH CLINICS OFFER WHOOPING COUGH BOOSTER FOR ALL SEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS
Tdap shot required before starting school on August 14
LOS ANGELES - For the Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) 2012-2013 school year, students entering, advancing or transferring into seventh-grade will need proof of a whooping cough (also known as pertussis) booster immunization, known as Tdap, beginning Aug. 14, the first day of school. Students who have not received the shot will not be able to attend classes.
Officials have been alerting families throughout the summer via school communication, phone calls, letters and social media. District Health Clinics are open to give LAUSD students the booster shots free of charge.
Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months. The immunity received from either early childhood immunization or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis. Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools and communities against pertussis.
The Tdap booster shot, which is a state mandate for public and private schools, is recommended for children over the age of 10 to protect them, and those around them, from whooping cough. All students entering or advancing to the seventh- grade will need a Tdap booster shot in order to attend school after July 1, 2012. In conjunction with the ILWU, we hosted a dedication ceremony this past Saturday to officially open our school. Family members of Harry Bridges, ILWU leadership, including international vice president Ray Familathe and pensioners' poet laureate, Jerry Brady , Rep. Janice Hahn from the 36th District, city council member Joe Buscaino, and LAUSD's own superintendent Dr. John Deasy, boardmember Dr. Richard Vladovic, and principal Lou Mardesich all spoke words of praise, hope and encouragement as we enter into this, our first year serving the families of Wilmington.
